While a wealthy Swedish family celebrates their patriarchs for Alexander’s birthday (Eand Josephson, cries and whiskers), news about the outbreak of World War II reaches the distant Baltic Island – and the happy mood goes to horror. The family descends into a state of psychological destruction, which Tarkovsky’s light gray arrest palette has caused brilliantly, washed in the dark landscape around their house.
