Tuesday’s clash between officials of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) and operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) at the premises of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, over the custody of suspended Governor of (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has sparked growing outrage and condemnation.
After Justice Nicholas Oweibo of the Federal High Court in Lagos granted Emefiele bail in the sum of N20 million, chaos erupted as DSS operatives attempted to take custody of the embattled apex bank chief. The melee that followed saw a prison officer’s clothes nearly torn into shreds before the situation was brought under control.

In response to the unprofessional conduct exhibited by the DSS, constitutional lawyers have strongly condemned the agency’s actions and called for the suspension and arrest of the Director-General of the DSS, Yusuf Bichi. They expressed their dismay over the DSS’s continuous disrespect for the rule of law and emphasized the need for urgent action by the government to address this abuse of power.
The lawyers pointed out that the DSS had previously disregarded court rulings that barred them from arresting Emefiele and had also ignored court orders for his release. They further stated that the agency’s actions have demonstrated a lack of regard for the rule of law and have raised serious concerns about the agency’s respect for democracy.
In light of these developments, the constitutional lawyers called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take immediate action and order the arrest of the DSS DG to hold him accountable for the actions of his operatives. They stressed that such behavior cannot be allowed to continue and that it is crucial to safeguard the image of the judiciary and uphold the principles of democracy.
Overall, the clash has sparked outrage and calls for accountability, highlighting the need to address issues surrounding the DSS’s actions and respect for the rule of law in Nigeria.
